Writers Block – April 16th

April 16th Writers Block

The new season of Writer’s Block begins April 16 at the Bartell Theatre.

If you’ve been to one of these nights before, you know the idea is simple: great songwriters, a quiet room, and an audience that listens. Three artists share the stage in a Nashville-style Songwriters in the Round, trading songs and stories throughout the evening. No band, no distractions—just the craft of songwriting, up close.

This season opener features three remarkable writers, each bringing their own voice and perspective to the circle: Ellis Paul, Stone and Snow, and carisa.

Ellis Paul is one of the most respected voices in contemporary folk songwriting, known for songs that are both deeply personal and widely resonant. Over a long and celebrated career he has released more than twenty albums, earned numerous songwriting honors, and influenced a generation of writers through his music and teaching.

Ohio’s Stone and Snow bring a thoughtful blend of indie folk and Americana, with songs that balance intimacy and atmosphere. Their music feels both timeless and modern—rooted in story, melody, and a sense of place.

Former Madisonian carisa is a rising voice whose songs combine emotional honesty with a striking vocal presence. Her writing moves effortlessly between vulnerability and strength, creating moments that feel both deeply personal and instantly relatable.

Together they’ll share the stage the way this music was meant to be heard—song by song, story by story, each writer building on the last.

Writer’s Block is about more than a concert. It’s about creating a listening room where songs can breathe, stories can unfold, and a community of music lovers can gather around the simple power of a well-written song.

New: Song Workshops

One of the most common questions I hear after our Writer’s Block concerts is: “Do these artists ever teach workshops?”

This year, the answer is yes.

Beginning this season, Writer’s Block will host a small, in-depth songwriting workshop the day after each concert, giving a handful of songwriters the chance to spend real time learning from our national guest artists. These sessions are designed to be thoughtful, practical, and personal—the kind of conversations about craft that rarely happen in larger settings.

We’re excited to partner with Muso, a new Madison-based creative space dedicated to supporting musicians and the songwriting community. Muso provides a perfect environment for these kinds of sessions: intimate, focused, and built around the idea that songs deserve careful attention.

Each workshop will be very small—typically 10 to 12 participants—so that everyone has a chance to share work, ask questions, and dig into the writing process.

2026 Workshop Schedule

April 17 — Ellis Paul

One of the most respected songwriters in contemporary folk music, Ellis Paul has spent decades touring internationally and mentoring songwriters. His workshops are known for their mix of practical craft insight and encouragement.

August 7 — Regan Stewart

Nashville songwriter Regan Stewart brings a modern writer’s perspective to the room, sharing the tools and approaches she uses in the professional songwriting world.

December 4 — Amy Speace

An acclaimed songwriter, performer, and teacher, Amy Speace has helped countless writers sharpen their voice and deepen their lyrical work.

How to Attend

Because the workshops are intentionally small, attendance is extremely limited and participation is by direct contact only.

If you’re interested in attending one of the sessions, the only way to request a spot is through the contact form on the Writer’s Block website.

Once I hear from you, I’ll follow up with details and availability.

These workshops are meant to be focused, collaborative, and welcoming spaces for serious songwriters, whether you’re just starting out or have been writing for years.

If spending a day talking about songs, structure, lyrics, and inspiration with a world-class songwriter sounds like your idea of a good time, I’d love to hear from you.
